Wednesday 31st May sees the opening of SSP 2017 in Boston. On this opening day, one of the key sessions is Innovation in Scholarly Book Publishing, which challenges the audience to consider: “what have we achieved and what more is needed?”
Alice Meadows of ORCID moderates the session, joined by such luminaries as:
- Alison O’Connell, Aries Systems Corporation
- Jasmin Lange, Brill USA, Inc.
- Alex Humphreys, ITHAKA
- Sven Fund, Knowledge Unlatched
- John Hammersley, Overleaf
- Andrew Preston, PUBLONS
- Melissanne Scheld, Publishers Communication Group
- Martijn Roelandse, Springer Nature
This promises to be a lively session, providing both an update and look forward to the future of scholarly publishing, via a combination of lightning talks, presentations, and small group activities.
The move to digital has been much slower for books, due to a number of factors:
- open access has yet to really take off
- books are more likely to be ignored in the academic assessment process
- research infrastructure has been developed largely in response to the needs of journal publishing
Yet book publishing is a vital element of scholarly communications. Speakers will provide an overview of the books infrastructure and some new author tools and services; discuss OA as a business model for books; review some key post-publication challenges such as including books in the researcher evaluation process; identify opportunities to improve recognition for peer review of books; and examine some new approaches to increasing discoverability and usage. Participants will then work in small groups to consider the academic book of the future will it still exist, what might it look like, how will it be used?
The session concludes with “Reimagining the Monograph”, a presentation by Alex Humphreys of JSTOR.
