HERON grows business by 30 percent in one year

Online coursepack service embraced by publishers and libraries alike

HERON, the UK’s leading web-based supplier of online course packs to Higher Education Institutions in the UK, has added approximately 600 books to the HERON catalogue for instant clearance through its recent signing with BMJ Books, bringing the total number of titles in HERON’s catalogue to 42,634.

In addition, HERON has increased the number of UK universities and colleges that subscribe to the service from 46 to 71 over the last year, and has expanded its reach to Ireland where the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, has recently embraced the online coursepack service.

Speaking of their decision to work with HERON, Helen Robertson, Sales and Marketing Manager of BMJ Books comments: “As specialist medical publishers, our focus is on reaching qualified doctors and specialists but we realise that there is some cross over with the Higher Education market. We believe that our arrangement with HERON will increase our exposure to this market and heighten the accessibility of our well-established medical literature nationwide.”

Other recent signatories include Taylor & Francis Books Ltd, Kluwer Academic, Lippincott Williams and Wilkins, Open University Press, Baywood Publishing Company, CABI Publishing and Emap Healthcare.

HERON creates online packs of course-related material such as articles and book chapters, including negotiating copyright clearance on behalf of the library or lecturer of a specific course and all necessary digitisation. Created by a joint initiative between Stirling, Napier and South Bank Universities, with initial funding from the UK Higher Education Funding Councils through the JISC, HERON became part of Ingenta in March 2002.
