Ingenta Select passes the baton to IngentaConnect

“Industry veteran” retires as new flagship site comes of age

Ingenta plc, the technology and services provider for the publishing and information industries, recently announced the final phase in the launch of its flagship web service, IngentaConnect. The current release sees the integration of several features previously available via the Ingenta Select interface, including increased information commerce functionality, OpenURL-compliant reference linking, links between old and new versions of journal titles, and hosting of additional content types such as books, monographs, reports and statistics.

Consequently, Ingenta Select has been retired after nearly 10 years serving the information community. The trailblazing journal-hosting platform was the first to offer an affordable online publishing package to scholarly publishers, and pioneered many influential products, from dynamic reference-linked PDFs to library-administered subscription activation. This history of market leadership provides an appropriate context for IngentaConnect’s position at the forefront of technical innovation in the publishing and information industries.

The final launch of IngentaConnect also heralds a change to the structure of Ingenta’s varied businesses, with IngentaConnect now operating as a separate business unit. “The end of this key long-term project means that we have fully integrated the CatchWord and Ingenta platforms”, says Vice President Douglas Wright, “which enables us to retire legacy services and move forward without their constraints. We have taken the proven functionality from our two previous sites, enhanced it with cutting-edge, extensible technology and additional compatible features, and created a robust yet flexible platform which will benefit all our customers.”

The IngentaConnect platform was launched in Autumn 2004 and receives up to 12,000,000 users a month. A broad range of content types is made available to users, under subscription and through a variety of different payment models such as library payment accounts, individual subscription sales and article pay-per-view access. The site offers tools designed to integrate the IngentaConnect platform with popular browsers and search engines such as Firefox and Google. Users can also take advantage of features such as flagged subscriptions, marked lists, reference linking and alerting services.
