LRRT announces winner of first Ingenta Research Award

Ingenta to sponsor research into Institutional Repositories

The Library Research Round Table (LRRT) of the American Association announced today that Patricia K. Galloway, Assistant Professor of Archival Enterprise, University of Texas School of Information, is the winner of the first Ingenta Research Award. Sponsored by Ingenta, the award is given annually by LRRT to support research projects about acquisition, use, and preservation of digital information. The award will support Dr. Galloway’s study, “Institutionalizing a University Department-Level Institutional Repository.”

Stephen Wiberley, chair of the Ingenta Award selection committee, remarked, “The development of institutional repositories holds great promise for preserving and making accessible scholarship of universities. For these repositories to be successful, we must increase our understanding of their benefits and costs. Patricia Galloway’s study will investigate the interests of faculty in depositing their work, the costs of developing and maintaining a departmental respository, and the respository’s value for teaching and research.”

Douglas Wright, Vice President of Ingenta, commented, “The subject of institutional repositories engenders much debate in the information community, but discussions have often been hindered by a lack of supporting evidence. We are pleased to be able to fund research into such a crucial issue and expect that Patricia Galloway’s study will provide valuable data to inform and develop the various perspectives.”

The Ingenta Award provides up to $6000 to sponsor research and $1,000 to support travel to a conference to present the results of that research.
