Ingenta introduces RSS feeds

RSS feeds now a feature of the IngentaConnect service

Ingenta plc, the global market leader in the online publication, distribution and readership of academic and professional research, is pleased to announce that RSS feeds are now available as a feature of the Ingenta service.

Launched with the second version of the IngentaConnect beta website, www.ingentaconnect.com, users will be able to sign up for feeds of new issues loaded for journals they are interested in, showing the latest issue numbers and dates with a link to the full table of contents on ingentaconnect.com.  The second version of the beta website, launched at ALA 2004, introduces functionality focused on improving the individual user experience.

RSS (Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary) is a web syndication protocol that allows publishing of ‘headlines’ from any website in a machine-readable XML-based format.  A program known as an RSS aggregator or feed reader can check RSS-enabled web pages and display any updated articles that it finds. This is more convenient than having the user repeatedly visit their favorite websites, because it makes sure that the reader only sees material that they haven't seen before, saving the user time but ensuring they don’t miss relevant updates.  Users can take advantage of the sites ability to ‘push’ new content to them as soon as it is available.

Commenting on Ingenta’s implementation of RSS, Kirsty Meddings, Senior Product Manager said: “We’re proud to announce that IngentaConnect is one of the first sites of its kind to implement RSS for e-journal alerting.  Web feeds are becoming increasingly important in influencing the way that users access online information, and Ingenta is committed to staying at the forefront of these developments and ensuring that our customers benefit from our technical expertise.  We plan to extend the types of RSS feeds offered from IngentaConnect as the site develops, and will be working closely with publishers and libraries to exploit the full potential of RSS in line with their needs.”

A new release of the IngentaConnect beta website will launch every month in the lead-up to its go-live date in the Fall. The third beta website launching in late July introduces e-commerce and pay-per-view features.
