World Tourism Organization assigns Ingenta to create e-library

The World Tourism Organization has signed a major agreement with Ingenta plc, the leading provider of online publishing services to academic and professional publishers, to create an e-library.

The three-year agreement includes the creation and maintenance of the web service, which officially launches at the Organization’s General Assembly in Beijing this October. A fully indexed and cross-searchable database of over 200 full-text reports published by the WTO, the service offers its 141 member states full free access to the service, while tiered subscriptions are available for associate members, libraries and individual users.

Dr Dirk Glaesser, Chief of Publications, said of the new service, "The World Tourism Organization serves as a global forum for tourism policy issues and a practical source of tourism know-how and statistics. The new e-library, powered by Ingenta, is ideal for communicating detailed research in an immediate and controlled medium to millions of individuals worldwide."

“Creating an e-library of this scale is a challenge,” said Simon Dessain, Chief Operating Officer, Ingenta. “But, the knowledge we have of working with similarly global organizations, such as the OECD and World Bank, gives us the knowledge to create a truly effective and efficient web service for the world’s tourism community.”

The World Tourism Organization prides itself on being the most complete and reliable sources of tourism statistics in the world. Its recommendations on tourism statistics were adopted by the United Nations in 1993 and are being implemented by countries around the world, creating a common language of tourism statistics that allows destinations to compare their success with that of their competitors. An archive of statistics, analysis and forecasts is held in the e-library.

In addition to providing an online journal service via Ingenta.com and IngentaSelect.com, Ingenta has built more than 60 publisher-branded websites for its clients and hundreds of journal websites ranging from branded home pages to highly customised stand alone websites. Ingenta continues to be the first choice for institutions, libraries and individual researchers to access electronic scholarly and professional content. Nearly 15,000 institutions worldwide are registered with Ingenta, where 1.8m articles are delivered each month.
