IngentaConnect 2.5: more power to the user

Latest platform release packed with state of the art functionality

Ingenta, the technology provider connecting the publishing and information industries, today announces the latest major release of IngentaConnect, the home of scholarly research. Release 2.5 of the company’s flagship website incorporates a number of new features designed to improve the end user’s research experience, and brings the changing perspectives and increasingly user-focussed objectives of the broader technology industry to the scholarly publishing market.

“The IngentaConnect platform was very well-received on its initial release back in 2004,” explains Engineering Manager Leigh Dodds, “But, in the last two years, best practice in web development has undergone rapid evolution. With this latest release, the site is now back at the cutting edge. We're continuing to cautiously apply ‘Web 2.0’ techniques to improve the user interface, and embrace open data and social bookmarking. I'm particularly pleased that we've been able to deliver several user-requested features.”

New functionality for IngentaConnect 2.5 includes:

  • Increased support for citation managers, with additional download formats BibTeX and RDF now being offered alongside previously available EndNote, ProCite and plain text
  • New social software interoperability enabling users to bookmark citations to del.icio.us, FURL, CiteULike, Connotea and Bidsonomy with just one click
  • Ajax-rendered collapsible volume and issue listings to simplify browsing and reduce scrolling on journal homepages – driven by the growing number of publishers now hosting large journal backfiles on IngentaConnect
  • Newly-architected page layouts to standardize display of user-interactive options, and to increase visibility of tools at article-level (the site’s entry point for most users), thereby increasing efficiency and usability.

Forthcoming developments include new Express Purchasing, which will simplify end-user pay-per-view and document delivery transactions.

The site will also now provide support for Ingenta’s publisher partners to sell advertising space around their online content, enabling them to benefit from the additional revenue streams being explored by prestigious publications elsewhere. “The landscape and funding of the scholarly information market is changing,” says IngentaConnect Vice President Douglas Wright, “and publishers need to balance subscription erosion with new incomes. Allowing discreet advertising on the IngentaConnect platform gives our publishers the opportunity to capitalise on our market-leading site traffic, thereby helping them prepare for future business models.”

The IngentaConnect platform was launched in 2004 as the successor to the company's previous Ingenta.com and Ingenta Select websites. The site provides free searching and browsing of its more than 20 million articles, with full-text access available to subscribing users and pay-per-view options for non-subscribing users. Characterized by cutting-edge developments, IngentaConnect was the first major full text host to provide RSS feeds and OpenURL-compliant email alerting across its full collection of 30,000 publications (which includes 20,000 fax- and Ariel-delivered journals). Library customers can upgrade to IngentaConnect Premium or IngentaConnect Complete to take advantage of additional features including site customization. Publisher customers can upgrade to the IngentabyDesign service which applies branding to seamlessly incorporate the full range of IngentaConnect functionality within their own web interface.
