Editor's note: Several marketing pioneers have been pushing for change in the PR sector with their development of the social media news release. The idea is to make press announcements more useful, informative and interactive to those reading them by utilising various social media tools. Ingenta ahead of the curve with latest release
One-click purchasing, behavioural recommendations

Ingenta, the technology provider which connects the publishing and information industries, recently announced the latest release of its flagship web platform, IngentaConnect. The release incorporates a number of new features which have been developed in response to user feedback and evolving technologies.

Firstly, a new partnership with content guidance pioneer Baynote will see IngentaConnect providing "more like this" article recommendations based on both the current context but also, more unusually in scholarly publishing, the user's previous behaviour. Articles reviewed or acquired by users with similar interests and behaviour will be recommended for consideration and potential purchase. [More about how it works]

This development underlines Ingenta's commitment to behavioural tracking and targetting as a more sophisticated means to deliver content to its users; during the last year, the company has also built a relationship with behavioural advertising network Tacoda to increase the efficacy of its online advertising services.

In addition, the site's pay-per-view and document delivery experience has been simplified with a new "Buy now" purchasing option enabling logged-in users to purchase documents with one click, instead of adding them to a shopping cart and completing a full checkout process. "Sites like IngentaConnect are seeing significant growth in usage from non-traditional sources, for example, individual users coming directly to our site from Google. And buying habits have changed as users have become more confident in their internet usage," explains Ingenta Product Development Manager Kirsty Meddings. "We decided to capitalise on the increasing demand for single-article transactions, and to increase purchase probability, by making our purchasing process quicker and more intuitive, and by instituting the kinds of features familiar to users from sites like Amazon and eBay."

Ingenta's feature-driven, iterative development process sees regular platform releases, every 6 to 8 weeks, to ensure that new functionality is made available as quickly as possible. Other additions within the last few months include integration with CrossRef's forward linking service [what is this?] [view example], as well as LOCKSS and Portico compliance [what?]; the site is also in the process of being audited for adherence to the second release of the COUNTER code of practice [what?].

IngentaConnect provides over 25,000 libraries with access to over 10,000 electronic journal, book and monograph titles and over 20,000 fax- and Ariel-delivered publications. Its proprietary content enhancement software adds state-of-the-art functionality to PDF articles, while the intuitive web interface provides users with a range of interactive features to support effective online research. The site receives over 10 million page views each month from over 5 million unique users, and enables users to view full text via subscription and through a variety of different payment models such as library payment accounts, individual subscription sales and article pay-per-view access.

: context and behaviour are combined to determine the user's intent, which is then analysed for relevance to that of the site's other users; patterns that emerge from this analysis are used to recommend additional content which is more likely to be of interest and relevance to the user than regular, contextual recommendations. Sophisticated behavioural analysis monitors not simply clicks and page views, but also the length of time that a user spends on the page and the type of activities that they carry out there.
